And this is what I saw:
on the far side of a busy road in Cricklewood,
a young blind woman, walking along the pavement,
long stick sweeping the ground in front,
feeling her way through the morning.
And this is what I saw:
another blind woman passing right by me
her long stick sweeping the pavement
between kerb and garden walls,
detecting the tree to one side.
And this is what I saw:
this second woman finding her way between two parked cars,
and then pausing at the road edge,
listening intently.
And this is what I saw:
this blind woman launching herself into the road,
when she thought it was clear,
hurrying to the far side,
detecting the kerb, reaching safety.
And this is what I saw:
the two women making contact, greeting each other;
the second linking arms with the first,
then them setting off together,
one long stick sweeping the ground,
feeling their way through the morning.
