Together we have planted

In this first winter of our married life
we have planted hundreds of trees together;
we have set out in all weathers
carrying the hard paraphernalia:
spades and stakes, tubes and hammers;
and the softer gifts: small trees, love.

We have worked the land together,
selecting spots, digging holes, hammering stakes;
older trees looming in the mist looked down
in silence on our planting;
they have seen our minor disputes,
and the spreading effects of our husbandry.

In this first winter of our married life
we have returned home in all weathers,
much of the hard paraphernalia left behind;
we have exercised the softer gifts;
what will grow and not grow remains unknown,
but, together, we have planted with love.
