I will wait for you in the dark

I will wait for you in the dark

And I will go with you into the caves:
into the darkness, under the earth,
leaving this world for another,
by the flickering light of torches

We will encounter petrified columns,
slow-formed through many lifetimes,
and sinuous curves and smoothed walls,
shaped by water flows, in untold passages

At the place of the red ochre
I will anoint your skin with the earth,
and your flesh will gleam white and red
by the flickering light of torches

We will drop deeper into the earth
through cracks and fissures in the rock
find new caverns in the dark
and hear the distant sound of water falling

And if you need to go beyond alone
I will wait for you in the dark and sing;
and when you return I will welcome your ochred body
by the flickering light of torches
