As, on a starry Christmas night…

As, on a starry Christmas night…

As, on a starry Christmas night,
with the sharp cold pinching at your nose,
and the frosty snow crunching underfoot,
you may co-operate with your family
to set fire to a waxy card
at the base of a large paper lantern,
and watch the envelope slowly fill with hot air
so that the lantern starts to take on a little life of its own,
tugging and moving gently in your hands…

As, on a starry Christmas night,
when the moment is irresistibly right,
you may release the lantern,
so that it soars straight up into the night-time,
shooting up towards the stars,
translucent white light and orange fire dwindling,
stretching your being as you rise with it,
so that your flimsy fragility
rejoices in the endless dark liberation
opening around you…

As, on a starry Christmas night,
with the moon rising large in the east,
and the voices you love exclaiming round you,
and the crunch of frosted snow below,
you may glimpse the beauty of our beginnings,
and the outrageous courage of our journey
into the unforeseen
and the spark which illuminates momentarily
the illusion of solidity in our lives…

…so may we all encounter joy
