The one who is brought within

The one who stands at the door of your church,
whatever its name, seeking entrance,
is transformed by the welcome they receive.
The one who is brought within, and warmed,
and sustained with bread,
can grow into a companion;
you can marvel as their smile arrives,
and at the gifts they bring.
The one who is brought within
is not the same as the one who stands without.
The one who is turned away,
you can never know.

The one who stands at the door of your self,
patient, or angry, seeking entrance,
is transformed by the welcome they receive.
The one who is brought within
is not the same as the one who waits outside.
At first, you may smile to them only,
and that is a start.
Later you may invite them into the hallway,
and begin a conversation.
But when you welcome them fully,
and sustain them with love,
their true nature can emerge,
not as given,
but instead co-created with you,
in the transforming power of that moment.

The one who is turned away,
you can never know.

You are transformed by the welcome you give.
